I have just found out following a response from a Q&A answer I posted over on GTA Forums that there is an unlisted feature of GTA Online Chat that I feel should be posted here which may help answer questions on the subject of in game chat.
Chat settings are controlled through the Interaction Menu and can be set to Everyone, Crew, Friends, Crew + Friends or No One.
What appears is not common knowledge is that this only applies to Free Roam and non team based jobs and does not apply to job lobbies while waiting for a job to start.
Example:
You join a Team Deathmatch and the job begins yet you wonder why you hear the gangsta-rap in the background or the inventiable household background noises.
This is because the game's chat settings are replaced by a Team based chat setting so you can hear the comments of your team mates during the team based game mode, the only way currently to overcome this on the PS4 is to have a PSN party chat setup, if you set this to private then no one join your chat unless invited and you can enjoy comnment/music free team based game modes.

I don't use my mic much so am rarely if ever in a party chat or anything but I do find it annoying when people have mic's on in jobs like deathmatches and adversary modes and they are either jabbering away in a foreign tongue, playing music, talking to family or just making too much noise in general. It can really effect my concentration so it has gotten to the point now that if I'm waiting for a lobby to fill up I'll automatically mute anyone manually that comes into the lobby with a mic on. It is frustrating if the person with the mic is one of the last to join and the host launches the job before I can mute them as I don't risk trying to mute them during the job as I'd leave myself vulnerable so in that instance I have to endure the unwanted noise.

I didn't know that. To be honest, I never use the Mic unless I really have to (coordinating heist missions).

This thread reminded me of something that pissed me off regarding Mics & Chats.
About a month ago, I joined a Pacific Heist finale & the host kicked me out after a couple of seconds because I didn't have a mic ... He didn't even give me enough time to either text him or get & plug the mic. What kind of bullshit is that? We all know what they were planning to do ... Its not a secret.

Game chat in general is just...yuck...never any decent conversation to be had there, plus the 12 year olds and their awful rap music in the background is just a major killer of the game for me.
